The Power of a Whisper

1 KINGS 19:11-13 NIV

11 The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”

Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

As we isolated ourselves and the world was isolated…from us….we entertained ourselves in noise…in music..movies..games…even reading was ‘Audible”

THEN

An amazing thing came…a still small voice..broke through my own head and my heart heard this whisper….”listen”…

The traffic noise was gone….the working noise of city projects, street sweepers, shops busy with customers…all quiet…seemed even the power lines “tones” shifted…

The television was turned off. Pandora was turned off…YouTube was turned off…and I was let loose on myself….

I live within a city..yet am blessed with beautiful cedars that are 50 years old as my landscape at my front windows…

I listened to the trees…and began to gauge my “seasons” through them….through their swaying….boughs of needles dropping….cones scattering….new life sprouting….the way they sang with the wind..and rejoiced in the rain…and emitted joy in the sunshine..and prayed with me in the gloaming of evening tide….

My senses expanded..became more energized in the rhythm of Spirit…

I had meditated daily for over 4 decades..yet still….life was busy..noisy and full…

yet..

not as full as when the thunder could be heard..and the whispers rolled softly from the echoes in lightning bolts of energy…

God speaks softly..and wants my full attention..wants my Human and Spirit..in a Unified, balanced attention…

so the remembering will be deeply sown….

It is not I that walks this path..God is carrying me….

When God asked me what I was doing here…..

I said…

I needed to hear the thunder…

“Make peace with silence, and remind yourself that it is in this space that you’ll come to remember your spirit. When you’re able to transcend an aversion to silence, you’ll also transcend many other miseries. And it is in this silence that the remembrance of God will be activated.”
